KoolKlasiksFounded and formed by the De Leon, Villonco and Naboa families before the onset of World War II in the early part of 1938, LVN fast became one of the biggest film outfits in the country. With the success of its first film, the musical Giliw Ko, starring Fernando Poe, Sr., Ely Ramos and Fluer de Lis who subsequently became Mona Lisa, and likewise introduced Mila del Sol, the local entertainment industry witnessed what is going to be another pillar that will steer Filipino audience to the Golden Age of Movies. Like its rival then, the newly-established Sampaguita Pictures, it became the country’s counterpart of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Hollywood. When it chose a wide property in P.Tuazon, C.Benitez Sts in Cubao, with its wide gate bearing the studio initials emblazoned in red and framed in white beams reflected the Hollywood movie studios and thus marked a pillar in the local movie industry for 7 decades until it closed down in 2005.

KoolKlasiksTo offer paean to its glory and glamour by rewinding time to get younger generations of moviegoers closer to the classics, Cinema One’s Kool Pinoy Klasiks will unleash LVN’s greatest movies. On August 1 at 3:30 pm will be Malvarosa. This 1958 gem of director Gregorio Fernandez and writer Consuelo Osorio casts the winning Charito Solis with Leroy Salvador, Carlo Padilla, Jr., Eddie Rodriguez, Vic Diaz and Vic Silayan. Here’s where Charito playing the iconic role of Rosa displayed the character’s strength of spirit that made her a triumphant survivor of life’s burdens. On August 2 at 3:30 pm will be Mutya ng Pasig, the 1950 drama of director Richard Abelardo and screenplay of Mar Torres. Starring Jose Padilla, Rebecca Gonzales, Teody Belarmino, Delia Razon and Lily Miraflor, this beautiful drama where the depth of plotline starts from a town fiesta crowning a beauty queen. Two different men fall for the same woman who dies. No one knew that what she will leave is KoolKlasiksa sound of a siren that will haunt the town forever. On August 3 at 3:30 pm will be Kundiman ng Lahi, directed by the great Lamberto Avellana and written by Johny Legarda and Donato Valentin. It stars Charito Solis, Eddie Rodriguez, Joseph de Cordova, Rosa Aguirre and Miguel Lopez. In this powerful film, Charito Solis this time plays Isang who was forced to work for her tyrannical aunt when her mother dies, forcing her to fend for herself. At 7:30 pm will be Biyaya ng Lupa. This 1959 gem of director Manuel Silos and screenplayed by Celso Al Carunungan stars Rosa Rosal, Tony Santos Sr., Leroy Salvador, Carlos Padilla, Marita Zobel, Joseph de Cordova, Carmencita Abad and Carlos Padilla, Jr. When married couple Maria and Jose start planning their family, they likewise take to overseeing a lanzones orchard that shapes their lives. Little did they know that tribulations will slip into their lives and test their spirits. Biyaya ng Lupa did not only win the Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Story and Screenplay in the 1960 FAMAS, it received the KoolKlasiksNatatanging Gawad Urian for Manuel Silos in 1979, and the FAP Lifetime Achievement 1985. It gained international fame for its nomination for the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1960 and at the Asian Film Festival in the same year held in Tokyo where the late Leroy Salvador won the award for Best Supporting Actor. On August 4 at 3:30 pm will be Huk Sa Bagong Pamumuhay. Another gem of Lamberto Avellana, this action-drama by writer Rolf Bayer in 1953 Jose Padilla, Celia Flor, Ben Medina, Rosa Aguirre, Joseph de Cordova and Leroy Salvador shows the promise of a new life in Mindanao that awaits former dissidents who decide to surrender to the government after WWII. On August 5 at 1:30 pm will be Kakabakaba Ka Ba? With Christopher de Leon, Charo Santos, Jay Ilagan, Sandy Andolong, Johnny Delgado, Nanette Inventor, George Javier and Buboy Garovillo in this 1980 Mike de Leon masterpiece who collaborated with Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr. on the screenplay. This satirical comedy-musical focuses on two pairs of lovers caught in the crossfire between dope-trading Japanese and Chinese agents.

The 2nd Annual Kool Pinoy Klassiks is produced by Cinema One in its unrelenting support for the local entertainment arena. It is one of the channels of Creative Programs, Incorporated (CPI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of ABS-CBN.
